For decades, buying scratch-off tickets has been a national pastime in Hungary. We often give them as gifts on special occasions, and it’s still common for people of all ages to buy them at lottery shops. Now, let’s take a look at how one of today’s most popular games came about and what you need to know about it!

You can purchase countless scratch-off tickets at newsstands, post offices, and lottery shops. The tickets are issued by Szerencsejáték Zrt. (Gambling Ltd.), and 10–25 types are usually available. Currently, 23 types are available, which vary in price and gameplay.

The simplest one is the Blackjack scratch-off, which costs 300 Ft. It has a scratch-off area with five numbers. One is the dealer’s number and the other four are our card numbers. If our number is higher, we win the amount shown on the ticket. One of the most complicated games is Pharaoh’s Treasure. It also costs 300 HUF. However, we must find the numbers in the “Your Numbers” table, one by one, in three pyramid-shaped areas. If we find all the numbers in a row, we can win the amount indicated at the end of the row.

Prizes start at the ticket price, so the least you can win is 300 Ft. Currently, the highest prize is 75 million Ft, which you can win with the Casino, Treasure Chamber, Giant Gift, or Globetrotter tickets.

Here are some of the most popular scratch cards in detail:

Buksza Scratch Card: This ticket has a great design and an eye-catching, larger-than-usual size. It costs 1,000 HUF, and you can win in 10 games by opening the perforated surface. The top prize is 50 million HUF.

Pénzes Bőrönd (Money Suitcase): This ticket also costs 1,000 HUF, mainly because of its great design and the chance to win the 50 million HUF grand prize. During the game, you must open a total of eight suitcases and scratch off the foil underneath.

Treasure Chamber: With the latest domestic lottery ticket, you can win 75 million forints. Our odds of winning some kind of cash prize are 1 in 3.11, and we can play 10 different games. The ticket price is 2,000 forints.

Casino lottery ticket: Since its launch in April 2018, more than 30 million tickets have been issued in 10 series. Scratch the surface to reveal the grand prize of 75 million forints.

Online scratch cards

In light of the above, creating online lottery tickets is an exciting next step. The main difference between scratch cards and online lottery tickets is that the former can only be purchased from designated retailers, while the latter can be purchased online. Foreign tickets offer even higher prizes than domestic ones.

While the internet cannot replace the shared experience of scratching off a card, which is popular among many families, it does offer the chance to play for much less, starting from as little as 120 Ft. At the same time, players can also bet high stakes; if they are willing to pay a larger amount, they can win prizes of up to €16.8 million, or more than 6 billion HUF.

The best ones can be tried online for free.

Four-leaf clover: This is one of the cheapest, costing 45 Ft. You can win the jackpot with one copy out of 130,000, winning a prize of 450,000 Ft.

777: This costs 150 Ft per game. As its name suggests, there are seven jackpots worth 777,777 Ft. However, there are four million tickets, so winning is significantly more difficult.

Daily Payout: The daily prize is 450,000 Ft, meaning a total of 164,250,000 Ft in grand prizes for the lucky player. The entry fee is 600 Ft per ticket.

Car Cash Porsche: Win a Porsche 911 car worth 30 million HUF plus 9 million HUF in cash, with a ticket price of 1,200 HUF.

6 BILLION FT: You could become a millionaire with a single scratch-off, but the entry fee to win the huge 6 billion jackpot has increased. To take part, you will need to pay 6,000 Ft.

Scratch card history in Hungary

In Hungary, people were placing bets on each other even before the state was founded, with classic examples being cockfighting and jousting tournaments. Lotteries appeared in China in officially organized form before the beginning of our era, and they soon spread to Europe. The ancient Romans even issued lottery tickets to finance investments and battles.

The state lottery was a widely used method throughout medieval Europe. It generated significant revenue and was particularly popular in what are now Germany and the Netherlands. The lottery arrived in Hungary as an organized game of chance in 1763 thanks to Octavio Cataldi, who was granted a concession. This form of gambling was not particularly popular in its first century, mainly due to its foreign origins.

In the 1860s, the Hungarian Royal Lottery Company was established, making it easier for this form of gambling to reach the population. Around this time, the first state lottery drawings were held, with the proceeds going to charitable causes. For the next 50 years, lottery tickets were always created for specific charitable purposes, such as popular theater, hospitals, village reconstruction, and the Petőfi Memorial House. After World War II, Toto became popular, and lottery ticket printing continued. However, we were still far from the online scratch card system at that time.

Around this time, envelope lottery tickets were introduced. Unlike their predecessors (e.g., Lotto or Toto), these tickets allowed players to immediately find out if they had won and, if so, how much by opening the envelope after purchase.

The biggest disadvantage of envelope lottery tickets was that they could easily be seen through when held up to a strong light, making it easy to cheat with them, even though they had been protected from unauthorized access with a ring seal since 1967. Interestingly, around the time of the regime change, several series of tickets issued by OTP had to be withdrawn, and the prizes were recalled due to fraud.

In 1989, MTV and OTP developed Bong, a lottery ticket modeled after bingo tickets and coupon games that were popular in the United States. Purchased tickets were covered with special foil to prevent fraud. However, even after removing the foil, the ticket did not reveal whether it was a winner. Hundreds of thousands of players with the ticket serial number sat in front of their TV screens to watch the weekly winning numbers being drawn on Hungarian Television (just like in the lottery).

A common feature of scratch-off tickets is that the numbers, symbols, or inscriptions are covered by a special layer of latex. Scratching off this surface reveals the markings underneath, which determine whether you have won according to the rules. The text of simpler games reads: “If you find three identical numbers under the scratch surface, you have won.”

Scratch-card tricks

A lot has been written about a trick for scratch cards that allows you to immediately tell if a ticket is a winner. It is important to note, before anyone doubts the casino lottery ticket system, that sellers are required to activate products in the Szerencsejáték Zrt. system when they are purchased. This means that even if unpurchased tickets are winners, they cannot be redeemed.

However, there is a trick to scratch-off tickets: if the special letters under the scratched foil match (these letters are not part of the game; they are only for administrative purposes), the ticket is definitely a winner. Unfortunately, if they do not match, the ticket is not a winner.
